The Best Apple Crisp

This is the best dessert for the early fall when the sweet and firm apples are just in season. Use the best quality cinnamon you can get and get it from a spice merchant or even a store where you can get it bulk; it does make a difference. Within ten minutes of going in the oven the scent will fill the house and neighbors you loaned things to years ago will return them just to invite themselves in and wonder aloud if there is any left (Note: there isn’t). Optional accompaniments would be caramel sauce, ice cream, and whipped cream.

Adapted from :
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup flour (for the topping)
  • 1 cup quick cooking oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon flour (for the filling)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 6 large apples or 12 small apples (to make about 6 cups of sliced apples)
  • Number one : Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Number two : Peel, core, and slice apples. Place in a baking dish. RECOMMENDED SIZES: 8″ round, 9″ round, or any 2-quart casserole dish. If using a bigger size (such as 9″x13″) consider doubling the recipe to maintain the intended apple-to-topping ratio.
  • Number three : Mix together ½ cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Sprinkle the mixture over the sliced apples and toss to combine.
  • Number four : Combine the remaining ingredients in a bowl and mix until crumbly. Use a fork to incorporate the butter, if necessary. Top the sliced apples evenly with the crumbly oatmeal mixture. Do not mix the topping into the apples.
  • Number five : Bake for 45 minutes or until apples no longer have any crunch. Serve warm.
